  • Running a Small Business While Dealing with Subglottic Stenosis: My Story

The last few weeks haven’t quite gone to plan… As a small business owner, you get used to juggling a lot. But nothing really prepares you for managing your business while dealing with ongoing health issues. I have a rare condition called subglottic stenosis, and over the past seven years I’ve had multiple procedures to help manage it — most recently a balloon dilation (my eighth). Normally, recovery is straightforward. I am in and out in day. Just a couple of days after surgery, I still was not feeling good and ENT suggested that I go to A&E. After a trip to A&E, doctors carried out an ECG, X-ray, and CT scan, and found air around my lungs and heart — a complication caused during surgery. It turns out there was a small hole somewhere, something that can occasionally happen but is still pretty scary to hear. After a short hospital stay, I was home in time for Good Friday. Grateful to be back, but not feeling quite right. A week later, I ended up back in A&E again. More checks, more waiting, and confirmation that there was still air around my heart. Not exactly the kind of situation you plan for — especially during the school holidays. The Reality of Running a Business When You’re Ill with Subglottic Stenosis One of the hardest parts of being self-employed is that there’s no backup plan. When you’re unwell, the business doesn’t pause. Orders still need fulfilling, customers still need replying to, and everything still depends on you. As a one-person business, that pressure can feel huge. But this experience reminded me of something really important — you don’t have to do everything alone. I was incredibly lucky to have support from family and friends who stepped in when I needed it most. Whether it was helping with the kids or just being there, it made all the difference. And despite everything going on behind the scenes, we still managed to have a lovely half term. It might not have been full of big days out, but it was filled with quality time and memories — and that’s what really matters. Half term fun Recovery, Uncertainty, and Getting Back to Work Right now, I’m still waiting for follow-up checks and another X-ray to fully understand what’s happening. Recovery from a balloon dilation with complications isn’t something you can rush, and I’m learning (slowly!) to listen to my body. But I’m also at a point where I can begin easing back into work. I’m back at the laser, taking things one step at a time, and feeling genuinely grateful to be doing what I love again. What This Experience Has Taught Me If there’s one thing this experience has highlighted, it’s how unpredictable life can be — especially when you’re managing a long-term condition like subglottic stenosis. But it’s also shown me: The importance of slowing down when your body needs it How valuable support from family and friends really is That running a small business isn’t just about work — it’s about balance And that even during difficult times, you can still create meaningful moments Back to Business (Slowly and Steadily) While I’m not quite back to full speed yet, I’m getting there. Orders are being made, messages are being answered, and I’m easing back into normal life — with a lot more appreciation for the small things. If you’re a fellow small business owner going through a tough time, whether it’s health-related or just life in general, know that you’re not alone. Sometimes, just getting through the week is more than enough.

  • Making Birthdays Special with Custom Birthday Decor and Cake Toppers

Birthdays are those magical days when we get to celebrate life, love, and all the little moments that make us smile. But let’s be honest - sometimes, the usual decorations and store-bought cakes just don’t cut it. That’s where custom birthday decor steps in to save the day! One of my absolute favourite ways to add that extra sparkle? Custom cake toppers. They’re like the cherry on top of a perfect birthday celebration. Why Custom Birthday Decor Makes a Difference Have you ever walked into a party and thought, “Wow, this feels so personal and special”? That’s the power of custom birthday decor. It’s not just about looking pretty; it’s about creating an atmosphere that screams you or the birthday person . When you add personalized touches, it shows you care enough to go the extra mile. Custom birthday decor can be anything from banners with the birthday person’s name to themed table settings. But cake toppers? They’re the centerpiece of the cake and often the first thing guests notice. Imagine a cake with a topper that perfectly matches the birthday person’s hobbies, favourite colours, or even a funny inside joke. It instantly makes the cake more memorable and the celebration more heartfelt. How to Choose the Perfect Custom Cake Topper Picking the right cake topper can feel overwhelming with so many options out there. Here’s a little guide to help you nail it: Think about the theme : Is it a superhero party, a vintage tea party, or a simple elegant gathering? Your topper should match the vibe. Consider the birthday person’s personality : Are they quirky, classic, or maybe a bit whimsical? The topper should reflect that. Size matters : Make sure the topper fits the cake size. Too big can look awkward, too small might get lost. Material choice : From acrylic to wood or even edible toppers, pick what suits your style and budget. Customization options : Look for places that offer personalized details like names, ages, or custom messages. Corporate Cupcake Toppers Adding That Personal Touch with Personalized Cake Toppers for Birthdays One thing I’ve learned is that nothing beats a cake topper that’s made just for the person you’re celebrating. Whether it’s a miniature version of their favourite pet, a caricature, or a simple elegant script of their name, personalised cake toppers bring a unique charm. If you want to explore some amazing options, check out personalized cake toppers for birthdays . They offer a fantastic range that can be tailored to any style or theme. Plus, having a custom topper means your cake becomes a keepsake, a little piece of the celebration that can be saved and cherished. Tips for Ordering Custom Cake Toppers Order early : Custom pieces take time to create and ship. Double-check spelling : Names and messages should be perfect. Ask for samples or photos : This helps you visualize the final product. Coordinate with your baker : Make sure the topper works well with the cake design and size. Creative Ideas to Pair with Your Custom Birthday Decor Once you have your cake topper sorted, why stop there? Custom birthday decor can extend to so many other fun elements: Personalized banners and signs : Add a banner with the birthday person’s name or a fun message. Custom party favours : Think mini keepsakes that match the cake topper theme. Themed tableware : Plates, napkins, and cups that tie everything together. Photo booth props : Custom props that guests can use to snap memorable pictures. Unique centerpieces : Coordinate with the cake topper colours and style for a cohesive look. Gymnastic Cake Topper Making It Memorable for Everyone The best part about custom birthday decor and cake toppers is how they make everyone feel included and special. When guests see the thought and effort put into the details, it creates a warm, inviting atmosphere. Plus, it gives the birthday person a moment to shine and feel truly celebrated. If you’re planning a party for a business event or a corporate celebration, custom cake toppers and decor can also reinforce your brand in a fun and subtle way. Imagine a company logo or mascot topping the cake - it’s a great conversation starter and leaves a lasting impression. Final Thoughts on Custom Birthday Decor and Cake Toppers So, next time you’re gearing up for a birthday bash, think beyond the usual. Custom birthday decor and cake toppers are simple yet powerful ways to make the day unforgettable. They add personality, charm, and a whole lot of joy to the celebration. Remember, it’s the little details that turn a good party into a great one. And trust me, a beautifully crafted cake topper is one of those details that guests will remember long after the candles are blown out. Ready to make your next birthday extra special? Dive into the world of custom cake toppers and watch the magic happen!

  • The School Holiday Juggle (And Why I Wouldn’t Change It)

Running your own business definitely has its challenges, but during the school holidays… it’s a whole different level of juggling! The usual routine goes out the window, the days get louder, messier, and a lot more snack-filled — and suddenly you’re balancing running a business with making sure the kids are having the best holidays possible. And honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way. Yes, it’s busy. Yes, it’s tiring. And yes, most days I feel like I’m switching between “mum mode” and “work mode” about a hundred times a day. But I feel so lucky to be in a position where I can do both. I don’t have to rely on family for childcare. I don’t have to spend money on holiday clubs. Instead, I get to spend the whole holidays with my kids — making memories, enjoying the little moments, and just being there while they’re still young. That’s something really special, and I never take it for granted. Of course, behind the scenes, the juggle is real. Work doesn’t stop — it just shifts. Days are for the kids, and evenings are for the business. Once they’re in bed, that’s when I switch gears and get orders finished, messages replied to, and everything ticked off that couldn’t be done earlier. It can be exhausting, but it’s worth it. I always make sure my orders are completed and sent out on time (that’s a non-negotiable for me), but I’ll be honest — other parts of the business do slow down a little. Admin gets pushed back, growth plans pause, and the “extra” jobs have to wait until the kids are back at school. Because the truth is, when you run your own business, the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. So naturally, when your focus is split, things might not move as quickly as you’d like. But that’s okay. This is just a season — and a really special one at that. The business will always be there to grow, build, and push forward. But these school holidays, these days with the kids while they’re still young… they won’t last forever. So for now, I’m embracing the slower pace (even if it comes with late nights and lots of coffee ☕), soaking up the chaos, and making the most of every moment. Because this is exactly why I started my business in the first place. And truly… I wouldn’t have it any other way.

  • International Women's Day

Yesterday was International Women’s Day 🤍 I’ve been thinking about the women who shaped me — the ones who loved me first, guided me, challenged me, and showed me what strength really looks like. To our mums and nans — the quiet resilience, the sacrifices we didn’t always see, the unconditional love that built the foundation of who we are. To the teachers and mentors who saw something in us before we saw it in ourselves — who pushed us to think bigger, speak louder, and stand taller. Mum, Me and my lovely sister We are who we are because of you. And then there’s us — the women we are today. The jugglers. The builders. The nurturers. The leaders. The friends. The safe spaces. The ones breaking cycles, chasing dreams, holding families together, building careers, starting over when we have to, and showing up even when it’s hard. We are strong — not because it’s easy, but because we’ve had to be. We are soft and powerful. Ambitious and nurturing. Still learning. Still growing. Still becoming. And now, we look at the next generation — our daughters. Watching them figure out who they are. Watching their fire, their confidence, their curiosity. Teaching them that their voice matters. That they can take up space. That they are allowed to be bold, kind, driven, gentle, loud, quiet — whatever feels true to them. What a privilege it is to raise girls who know their worth. What a responsibility it is to model it. My beautiful daughter Here’s to the women who raised us. To the women we are. And to the women we’re raising. May we continue to lift each other, back each other, and remind the next generation that there is no limit to who they can become. Happy International Women’s Day 🤍 Four Generations of my family - Nans, Mums, daughters, cousins and Aunties #InternationalWomensDay #IWD #WomensDay #EmpoweredWomen #WomensEmpowerment #WomenSupportingWomen #StrongWomen #RaiseStrongGirls #NextGeneration #FemaleLeaders #WomenInBusiness #WorkingMum #MothersAndDaughters #MentorshipMatters #InspiringWomen #CommunityOverCompetition #Equality #BreakTheBias #SheBelievedSheCould #WomensLeadership

  • Why Choosing Small Businesses Matters for Personal Gifts

You’re Buying From a Real Person (Hi 👋) When you order from my small business, you’re buying from me. I design it. I make it. I pack it. I post it. Every order is personal. I see your name, I read your messages, and I genuinely care that what you receive is exactly right. That one-to-one connection is something I really value, and it’s a big part of why I love what I do. Handmade — Made With Intention Large retailers are great at offering convenience and consistency. What I offer is something a little different. I create handmade, personalised pieces designed around you — your home, your child, your business, your event, your gift. I’m not working from a production line. I’m creating each item individually, with care and attention. Need a different size? A name added? A colour adjusted? If I can do it, I will. That flexibility is one of the lovely things about being a small business. Personalised Gifts That Truly Feel Special One of the reasons people choose to shop small is because they want something that feels thoughtful. If you message me asking: “Can we change the wording?” “Could this be made to fit a certain space?” “Can you match a theme or colour?” I’m always happy to help where I can. I love that part — turning your idea into something real. It makes the finished piece even more meaningful. Quality and Care When you’re buying something for your home, your business, or as a gift, you want it to feel right. As a UK small business, my reputation means everything to me. I rely on trust, repeat customers and kind recommendations. That means I pay attention to the details — the materials, the finish, the overall feel of each piece. It’s not about being the fastest or the biggest. It’s about making something I’m proud to send out. What Your Support Really Does When you choose to support a small business, you’re supporting: • a real family • local suppliers • creativity and skills • someone who genuinely loves what they do In my case, you’re supporting a creative UK business built around thoughtful design and flexibility — and I’m incredibly grateful for that. There’s Room for Everyone There’s space for big retailers and small businesses. They serve different purposes, and we all shop where it makes sense. But when something feels important — a personalised gift, a keepsake, a custom piece for your space — that’s when shopping small can feel extra special. From Me, Honestly Small businesses aren’t here to compete on volume. We’re here to offer: • care • creativity • flexibility • and something made especially for you If that matters to you, I’m so glad you’re here. And if you’ve ever supported my small business — thank you. Truly. It means more than you know 🤍

  • Thoughtful Custom Corporate Gift Ideas to Impress and Delight

Why Corporate Gifting Matters More Than Ever Let’s be honest – corporate gifts can sometimes feel like a tick-box exercise. Ordered in a rush. Logo slapped on. Job done. But when it’s done well? It’s powerful. A thoughtful gift can boost team morale, strengthen client relationships and quietly reinforce your brand in the loveliest way. It’s not really about the thing  – it’s about the feeling behind it. You know when you receive something and you can tell someone’s actually thought about you? That’s the magic. Effort. Care. Attention to detail. In a world that moves at 100mph, that kind of personal touch really stands out. The secret? Customisation and relevance. Gifts that reflect the recipient’s personality, their role, or your company values are the ones that get kept, used and remembered – not shoved in a drawer. Corporate Gifting Ideas That Always Go Down Well Ready for a bit of inspiration? Here are some ideas that feel thoughtful, stylish and genuinely useful. 1. Personalised Desk Accessories There’s something lovely about a tidy, put-together workspace. Custom desk accessories – engraved pen pots, notebooks, wooden organisers – are practical but still feel special. Think a sleek notebook embossed with their initials. Or a beautifully finished wooden desk piece with your logo subtly included (not shouting, just quietly confident). They’re the kind of gifts that get used every single day – and that’s where the real value is. 2. Custom Drinkware You genuinely can’t go wrong with a good mug or water bottle. Coffee is basically a workplace love language at this point. Personalised mugs, tumblers or reusable bottles are always a hit. You can keep it classic with initials, or have a bit of fun with designs that reflect your company culture. And if you opt for eco-friendly materials like bamboo or stainless steel? Even better. It shows you care about the bigger picture too. 3. Gourmet Gift Baskets Food just makes people happy. It’s a fact. A curated basket of artisan treats, chocolates or local goodies feels generous and celebratory. Add custom packaging or a handwritten note and it instantly feels more considered. Perfect for holidays, anniversaries, big wins – or just a heartfelt “thank you”. Mini Cake Topper 4. Tech With a Personal Touch Useful tech is always appreciated – especially when it’s personalised. Think engraved wireless chargers, branded USBs or sleek Bluetooth speakers. They’re functional, stylish and something people will actually use rather than re-gift. Practical doesn’t have to mean boring. 5. Wellness & Self-Care Kits I love this one because it says, “We care about you as a person, not just what you do for us.” A simple wellness kit with candles, cosy touches, quality water bottles or relaxation bits can feel incredibly thoughtful. In today’s busy world, encouraging people to slow down and look after themselves is such a meaningful gesture. Plant with Corporate Logo How to Choose the Right Gift (Without Overthinking It) If choosing feels overwhelming, keep it simple: Know your audience  – What would genuinely brighten their day or make work easier? Stay true to your brand  – Are you playful and creative, or sleek and minimal? Let that shine through. Quality over quantity  – One beautifully made gift will always win over a bundle of cheap bits. Add a personal detail  – A handwritten note or thoughtful packaging goes a long way. Plan ahead  – Especially during busy seasons. Trust me, future-you will be grateful. It’s All in the Finishing Touches Presentation really does matter. A beautifully wrapped gift with a custom tag or branded box elevates the whole experience. It doesn’t have to be over the top – just thoughtful. Clean design. Lovely materials. A note that feels human, not corporate-scripted. Because ultimately, the goal isn’t just to hand over a gift. It’s to build relationships. To create that moment where someone feels genuinely appreciated. So next time you’re choosing corporate gifts, think beyond the obvious. Go personal. Go meaningful. Go for something they’ll actually use and love. That’s when your brand really shines. Happy gifting ✨

Have you ever spent way  too long scrolling for a gift… only to end up thinking, “Well, that’ll do”? Yep. Same. • Thoughtful Gestures: Unique Mother’s Day Gift Ideas to Celebrate Mum

Mother’s Day is that one day a year where we collectively try to condense a lifetime of gratitude into a single Sunday. Let’s be real: flowers wilt and chocolates disappear in a weekend. If you’re looking to give something that lingers—items that feel like a warm hug and a "thank you" combined—personalised wooden keepsakes are the way to go. I wanted to highlight a few items from my Pure Joy Designs  collection that turn simple gifts into core memories. 1. The Morning Ritual: Personalised Breakfast Board Nothing says "relax, we've got this" like breakfast in bed. But skip the flimsy tray and upgrade to the Breakfast Board with Egg Cup Holders . The Vibe:  It’s practical, sturdy, and charmingly rustic. The Twist:  Custom engraving makes it hers. Whether it's "Mum’s Sunday Brunch" or a sweet handwritten message from the kids, it turns a simple piece of toast and soft-boiled eggs into a royal event. Pro-Tip:  Serve it with her favourite sourdough, avocado and a perfectly timed 6-minute egg. 2. A Card She’ll Actually Keep: Wooden Greeting Cards We’ve all seen the "World’s Best Mum" paper cards that end up in a recycling bin the following week. A Personalised Wooden Greeting Card  is different. It’s a piece of decor. Why it works:  The tactile feel of the wood gives your message weight—literally and figuratively. Display Value:  These look stunning propped up on a mantle or a bookshelf, serving as a permanent reminder of your appreciation. 3. For the Green-Thumbed Queen: Wooden Plant Picks If your mum’s house looks more like a curated jungle, she doesn’t need another pot. She needs Wooden Plant Picks . The Detail:  These delicate stakes can be tucked into her favourite flowers. Personalisation:  Engrave them with the names of her "human" seedlings (the kids) or little growth puns like "Watch Mum Grow." It’s a small detail that makes her daily plant-watering routine a bit more joyful. 4. The Grand Finale: Wooden Gift Envelope If you’re giving a gift card, cash for a spa day, or a heartfelt letter, don’t just slide it into a paper sleeve. The Wooden Gift Envelope  is the ultimate "level up" for gift presentation. First Impressions:  It creates a sense of ceremony. It feels like opening a secret treasure chest rather than just an errand-run card. Sustainability:  It’s a beautiful, reusable piece that reflects a commitment to quality over "throwaway" culture. Why Choose Wood This Mother's Day? There is something deeply grounded about wooden gifts. They are durable, timeless, and—much like a mother’s influence—they only get better with age. When you choose pieces from Pure Joy Designs , you aren’t just buying a product; you’re choosing a handcrafted touch that shows you actually put thought into the "how" and "why" of your gifting. Happy Mother's Day to all the nurturers out there!

  • Wrapping Up 2025 at Pure Joy Designs ✨

As 2025 comes to a close, I wanted to take a moment to look back on the year and say a huge thank you . This year has been full of creativity, lovely conversations, and so many special projects. I’m so proud of what Pure Joy Designs has grown into. A Year Full of Personal Touches 2025 was all about creating pieces that feel personal and meaningful. From bespoke labels and wall decals to laser-cut gifts, wooden QR cubes, decorations, and children’s activities, every order brought something a little bit different. One of my favorite parts of running Pure Joy Designs is working closely with customers to bring their ideas to life. Whether it was a rough sketch, a Pinterest photo, or a “not sure exactly what I want but…” message, I loved turning those ideas into finished pieces that felt just right. The Joy of Customization Customization is at the heart of what I do. It’s not just about making a product; it’s about crafting a memory. Each piece tells a story. I believe that every gift should reflect the personality of the giver and the recipient. That’s why I take the time to understand what my customers want. Have you ever received a gift that felt just perfect? That’s the magic I aim to create with every order. It’s about those little details that make a big difference. Small Businesses, Big Smiles This year, I was lucky enough to continue working with some amazing small businesses and corporate clients. Creating custom signage, branded items, and display pieces is something I really enjoy—especially when it helps businesses stand out while still feeling warm and welcoming. The beech wooden QR cubes were a real hit again this year, particularly in professional and retail spaces. Seeing them used in such creative ways never gets old. Alongside business orders, I also spent lots of time creating items for birthdays, celebrations, seasonal events, and children’s activities. Knowing something I’ve made is part of a happy memory is honestly the best feeling. Celebrating Milestones Every milestone deserves a celebration, right? Whether it’s a birthday, an anniversary, or a new job, I love being part of those special moments. Custom gifts can turn an ordinary occasion into something extraordinary. For instance, I’ve created personalized gifts for weddings that have left couples in tears of joy. It’s those heartfelt reactions that fuel my passion. Learning, Growing & Creating 2025 wasn’t just about what I made, but how I grew. I tried new techniques, refined how I work behind the scenes, and pushed myself creatively more than ever before. Every challenge taught me something new, and every kind review or repeat order reminded me why I do this. I’m so grateful for every order, message, share, and recommendation this year—none of it goes unnoticed. Embracing New Techniques This year, I explored various new techniques. From experimenting with different materials to learning new design software, I’ve pushed my creative boundaries. It’s exciting to see how these changes can elevate my work. • Getting Organised: The Ultimate Guide to Decluttering and Labeling Your Home in the New Year

As the new year unfolds, many of us feel an urge for a fresh start. There is a unique sense of opportunity in the air that inspires us to clear out clutter and organise our homes. The sight of tidy drawers and neatly arranged wardrobes can bring immense satisfaction. From my own experience of loving organisation, I’ve developed a system that helps me sort through belongings efficiently. Let’s take on the challenge together and transform our spaces into welcoming havens. Nursery drawers organised with vinyl labels on boxes The Importance of Decluttering Decluttering goes beyond just tidying up; it’s about embracing what truly matters in our lives. A clean environment often leads to a clear mind. Studies show that 75% of people feel less stressed in an organised space. When chaos filters into our homes, it can create feelings of overwhelm. By removing unnecessary items, we regain control over our physical surroundings and our mental well-being. Every item in our homes carries a certain energy. By letting go of what no longer serves us, we free ourselves for growth and positivity. Imagine walking into a room that holds only the things you love and use; that feeling can be truly revitalising. Gold vinyl labels Getting Started: The Decluttering Process Step 1: Gather Supplies Before diving in, collect what you need for the process. Key items include: Bins/boxes for sorting Trash bags for items that are no longer useful Cleaning supplies for surfaces that need refreshing With your supplies ready, assess each item as you sort. Ask yourself if it adds value to your life. If not, it’s time to let it go. Step 2: Take Everything Out One of the best parts of organising is pulling everything out to see it all clearly. Start with one drawer or section, laying everything out on your bed or floor. This makes it easier to visualize your belongings. You might realize you have six pairs of black shoes you forgot about or multiple half-used candles. This eye-opening exercise can reveal purchasing habits you may want to change. Step 3: Categorize Your Items As you sort, group similar items together. This might include clothes, accessories, books, and kitchen utensils. This organisation will streamline the process of finding things later. Consider adopting a 'one in, one out' rule to help manage future clutter. For instance, if you buy a new shirt, commit to donating an old one. This method can significantly reduce the accumulation of unnecessary items. Labeling for Efficiency With the decluttering finished, take organisation a step further through labeling. Here’s why labels make a difference. Why Labels Matter Labels streamline your organisation efforts. They allow you to find items quickly without digging through bins. According to research, over 50% of people say they waste time searching for items in cluttered spaces. Labels not only add clarity but give each area a personal touch, making it easier to maintain order. Choosing Your Labeling Method There are several effective labeling methods to choose from, including: Vinyl Labels : These are great for various surfaces and come in numerous colors. You can create them using a label-making machine or order custom prints online. Toy storage Tags : Simple string tags can bring a charming touch, especially for items in clear bins. They allow for visibility while providing clear reference points. Loop Tags Select a labeling method that resonates with your style and the items you're organizing. The right labels can make the process enjoyable and effective! Loop tag acrylic labels Maintaining Your Organised Space Keeping your space organised is key after decluttering and labeling. It might seem overwhelming, but with a few habits, you can maintain your tidy haven: Monthly Reviews : Schedule time each month to assess any new items that have entered your space. Are there items that need sorting or donating? Immediate Replacements : Make it a habit to return items to their designated spots right after use. This small effort can prevent clutter from building up. Additionally, keep a donation box handy in your home. Add items regularly, and when the box is full, drop it off at a local charity. This not only keeps your space clean but also helps those in need. Fresh Starts Await The new year is the perfect chance to declutter, organise, and revitalize our living spaces. In my own journey of organisation, I’ve found sorting through my belongings to be both liberating and empowering. Coupled with effective labeling, I experience enhanced control and serenity in my home. A clean home truly contributes to a clear mind. So let’s seize this opportunity together, tackle those drawers and wardrobes, and create a space that mirrors our best selves! Here’s to an organized and fulfilling year ahead!
