  • Running a Small Business While Dealing with Subglottic Stenosis: My Story

The last few weeks haven’t quite gone to plan… As a small business owner, you get used to juggling a lot. But nothing really prepares you for managing your business while dealing with ongoing health issues. I have a rare condition called subglottic stenosis, and over the past seven years I’ve had multiple procedures to help manage it — most recently a balloon dilation (my eighth). Normally, recovery is straightforward. I am in and out in day. Just a couple of days after surgery, I still was not feeling good and ENT suggested that I go to A&E. After a trip to A&E, doctors carried out an ECG, X-ray, and CT scan, and found air around my lungs and heart — a complication caused during surgery. It turns out there was a small hole somewhere, something that can occasionally happen but is still pretty scary to hear. After a short hospital stay, I was home in time for Good Friday. Grateful to be back, but not feeling quite right. A week later, I ended up back in A&E again. More checks, more waiting, and confirmation that there was still air around my heart. Not exactly the kind of situation you plan for — especially during the school holidays. The Reality of Running a Business When You’re Ill with Subglottic Stenosis One of the hardest parts of being self-employed is that there’s no backup plan. When you’re unwell, the business doesn’t pause. Orders still need fulfilling, customers still need replying to, and everything still depends on you. As a one-person business, that pressure can feel huge. But this experience reminded me of something really important — you don’t have to do everything alone. I was incredibly lucky to have support from family and friends who stepped in when I needed it most. Whether it was helping with the kids or just being there, it made all the difference. And despite everything going on behind the scenes, we still managed to have a lovely half term. It might not have been full of big days out, but it was filled with quality time and memories — and that’s what really matters. Half term fun Recovery, Uncertainty, and Getting Back to Work Right now, I’m still waiting for follow-up checks and another X-ray to fully understand what’s happening. Recovery from a balloon dilation with complications isn’t something you can rush, and I’m learning (slowly!) to listen to my body. But I’m also at a point where I can begin easing back into work. I’m back at the laser, taking things one step at a time, and feeling genuinely grateful to be doing what I love again. What This Experience Has Taught Me If there’s one thing this experience has highlighted, it’s how unpredictable life can be — especially when you’re managing a long-term condition like subglottic stenosis. But it’s also shown me: The importance of slowing down when your body needs it How valuable support from family and friends really is That running a small business isn’t just about work — it’s about balance And that even during difficult times, you can still create meaningful moments Back to Business (Slowly and Steadily) While I’m not quite back to full speed yet, I’m getting there. Orders are being made, messages are being answered, and I’m easing back into normal life — with a lot more appreciation for the small things. If you’re a fellow small business owner going through a tough time, whether it’s health-related or just life in general, know that you’re not alone. Sometimes, just getting through the week is more than enough.

  • Making Birthdays Special with Custom Birthday Decor and Cake Toppers

Birthdays are those magical days when we get to celebrate life, love, and all the little moments that make us smile. But let’s be honest - sometimes, the usual decorations and store-bought cakes just don’t cut it. That’s where custom birthday decor steps in to save the day! One of my absolute favourite ways to add that extra sparkle? Custom cake toppers. They’re like the cherry on top of a perfect birthday celebration. Why Custom Birthday Decor Makes a Difference Have you ever walked into a party and thought, “Wow, this feels so personal and special”? That’s the power of custom birthday decor. It’s not just about looking pretty; it’s about creating an atmosphere that screams you or the birthday person . When you add personalized touches, it shows you care enough to go the extra mile. Custom birthday decor can be anything from banners with the birthday person’s name to themed table settings. But cake toppers? They’re the centerpiece of the cake and often the first thing guests notice. Imagine a cake with a topper that perfectly matches the birthday person’s hobbies, favourite colours, or even a funny inside joke. It instantly makes the cake more memorable and the celebration more heartfelt. How to Choose the Perfect Custom Cake Topper Picking the right cake topper can feel overwhelming with so many options out there. Here’s a little guide to help you nail it: Think about the theme : Is it a superhero party, a vintage tea party, or a simple elegant gathering? Your topper should match the vibe. Consider the birthday person’s personality : Are they quirky, classic, or maybe a bit whimsical? The topper should reflect that. Size matters : Make sure the topper fits the cake size. Too big can look awkward, too small might get lost. Material choice : From acrylic to wood or even edible toppers, pick what suits your style and budget. Customization options : Look for places that offer personalized details like names, ages, or custom messages. Corporate Cupcake Toppers Adding That Personal Touch with Personalized Cake Toppers for Birthdays One thing I’ve learned is that nothing beats a cake topper that’s made just for the person you’re celebrating. Whether it’s a miniature version of their favourite pet, a caricature, or a simple elegant script of their name, personalised cake toppers bring a unique charm. If you want to explore some amazing options, check out personalized cake toppers for birthdays . They offer a fantastic range that can be tailored to any style or theme. Plus, having a custom topper means your cake becomes a keepsake, a little piece of the celebration that can be saved and cherished. Tips for Ordering Custom Cake Toppers Order early : Custom pieces take time to create and ship. Double-check spelling : Names and messages should be perfect. Ask for samples or photos : This helps you visualize the final product. Coordinate with your baker : Make sure the topper works well with the cake design and size. Creative Ideas to Pair with Your Custom Birthday Decor Once you have your cake topper sorted, why stop there? Custom birthday decor can extend to so many other fun elements: Personalized banners and signs : Add a banner with the birthday person’s name or a fun message. Custom party favours : Think mini keepsakes that match the cake topper theme. Themed tableware : Plates, napkins, and cups that tie everything together. Photo booth props : Custom props that guests can use to snap memorable pictures. Unique centerpieces : Coordinate with the cake topper colours and style for a cohesive look. Gymnastic Cake Topper Making It Memorable for Everyone The best part about custom birthday decor and cake toppers is how they make everyone feel included and special. When guests see the thought and effort put into the details, it creates a warm, inviting atmosphere. Plus, it gives the birthday person a moment to shine and feel truly celebrated. If you’re planning a party for a business event or a corporate celebration, custom cake toppers and decor can also reinforce your brand in a fun and subtle way. Imagine a company logo or mascot topping the cake - it’s a great conversation starter and leaves a lasting impression. Final Thoughts on Custom Birthday Decor and Cake Toppers So, next time you’re gearing up for a birthday bash, think beyond the usual. Custom birthday decor and cake toppers are simple yet powerful ways to make the day unforgettable. They add personality, charm, and a whole lot of joy to the celebration.
